Dr. Stephen Roach
Accidental Conflict: America and China on the Brink
Join the Yale Club of Southwest Florida to hear Dr. Stephen Roach. Roach will provide his authoritative and informative take on the misguided forces driving conflict escalation between America and China, and the path to a new relationship.
In just the past five years, America and China have entered a trade war, a tech war, and a new Cold War. In this talk, Yale economist Dr. Stephen Roach will argue that these conflicts are being enabled by false narratives on both sides — narratives that are more a reflection of each nation’s fears and vulnerabilities than a credible assessment of the risks they face. He will suggest a creative approach for a new road map to a healthier Sino-American relationship.
Roach is a senior fellow at Yale’s Jackson School of Global Affairs and a senior lecturer at the Yale School of Management. Formerly chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia and chief economist at the New York–based investment bank Morgan Stanley, he was one of the earliest economists to predict the 2008 global financial crisis, and over the past decade, he has become recognized as a leading authority on U.S.-Chinese relations. His most recent book, Accidental Conflict: America, China, and the Clash of False Narratives, was published last year by Yale University Press, and we will have a limited number of copies available for purchase and signing by the author.
